websockets with pythonywhere

Does pythonanywhere support websockets

You can make websocket connections outbound -- that is, to websocket servers elsewhere on the Internet. But we don't currently support websocket servers -- we're working on addressing that.

Appreciate that it's not trivial, but it's been in the "working on that" stage for the best part of a decade. In the absence of an ETA, is there any way the community can help contribute to whatever you're working on? Would love to help work around this, as for me it's the biggest gap in the service. It's why I keep under-using PA, because of having to keep spinning up VPSs elsewhere just for web services, flask and sockets. How can we help?

Thanks for the offer! It's something we're working on full time right now. We have a working spiked solution, so it's "just" a case of turning that into production-ready code.

One thing that might really help is any beta-testing when we have something ready for people to start playing with. It's likely that we'll put together an initial release with no UI -- that is, you'd need to use the PythonAnywhere API to create a websockets site. If you'd be interested in playing around with that so that we can work through any low-level issues while in parallel we work on the front end, that could really help. Just let us know if you're interested.

Absolutely, would be very happy to! Awesome news and congrats for the progress, many thanks.

We will let you know!

Still keen to help out with testing any time you have something available :)

Thank you, we'll let you know :)

I want to know also!

Great! We'll let you know.
